Lightner Museum in St. Augustine FL

Enjoy wandering through the museum's setting — the former Hotel Alcazar, built in 1887 in the Spanish Renaissance style. Railroad magnate Henry M. Flagler commissioned architects Carrere and Hastings to design the Alcazar and the Ponce de Leon Hotel (across the street). The two young architects later designed the New York Public Library and the U.S. Senate office building. After years of accommodating vacationing wealthy patrons, the elegant resort hotel closed.

Chicago publisher, Otto C. Lightner, purchased the building to house his extensive collection of Victoriana in 1946 and opened the museum two years later.

He gave the museum to the city of St. Augustine. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Antique mechanical musical demonstrations are offered twice a day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Scavenger hunts are available for children.

The Lightner Museum is located in historic downtown St. Augustine, Florida. It is 20 minutes from I-95, one hour from Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, and two hours from Disney World, Epcot Center and Cape Canaveral. The museum is handicapped and wheelchair accessible.

Villa Zorayda Museum in St. Augustine FL

After several years of historical renovation, the Villa Zorayda with its collection of unique antiquities is a must see on your visit to our nations oldest city!

Closed for several years the Villa Zorayda Museum has undergone an extensive renovation and is once again open to the public as a museum. On the National Register of Historic Places it was built in 1883 as the winter residence of Franklin Smith utilizing his method of construction of poured concrete and crushed coquina shell. It is built 1/10th the scale of a section of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. This building set a precedence for St. Augustine and began the Moorish Spanish revival of architecture that is seen throughout the city today. In 1904 it became the Zorayda Club.

On display for the first time ever is the custom made bone china made exclusively for the Zorayda Club. In 1913 it was purchased by Abraham S. Mussallem, an authority on Oriental rugs, fine arts and Egyptian artifacts. In 1922 it became one of the most fashionable places for casino gambling. In the mid 1930's it was opened as a museum featuring the priceless antique collections of both Franklin Smith and A.S. Mussallem which are still on display today. The 45-60 minute tour gives an in depth look at the historical significance of the building to the City of St. Augustine, the magnificent architecture as well as descriptions of the many exquisite pieces you will see. On display is the "Sacred Cat Rug" over 2400 years old and made from the hairs of ancient cats that roamed the Nile River. Taken from a pyramid in Egypt it is said to possess a curse for anyone that walks on it!

VILLA ZORAYDA "BEHIND THE SCENES'/AUDIO GUIDED TOUR AVAILABLE
Visitors will be taken to rarely seen areas of the museum where we will give an explanation of what the area was used for in the past and what future plans may be coming. Highlight of the tour is the never seen before "Tower of the Princesses" located on the third floor which was a bedroom in the original house and where time has virtually stood still. *Stairs are steep and narrow and visitors must be in good physical condition to make the climb. Approximate time will be about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

St. Augustine Old Jail in St. Augustine FL

Home to prisoners for over 60 years, the Old Jail in St. Augustine looks more like a resort than a maximum-security facility. The original structure was built in 1891 by Henry Flagler, and although it has been restored and renovated throughout the years, it looks very much the way it did when it opened over a century ago.
Today, visitors to the Old Jail can take a guided tour, learn about the many prisoners and practices that took place here and see where the Sheriff and his wife and family lived— adjacent to where the prisoners were housed.

Meet Sheriff Joe Perry who had a reputation as being a harsh and strict warden – one of the toughest in the South. Walk through the men’s and women’s cells and see where executions took place in the gallows. Discover the history behind judicial practices in the 19th century and see an array of weapons and artifacts.

Adults and children are thoroughly entertained by our costumed actors who portray deputies from the early days and everyone gets a chance to try and escape! The Old Jail is one of just a few prisons of its kind still standing and makes for a great sightseeing and history adventure.

Potter's Wax Museum in St. Augustine FL

America's first wax museum, Potter's has been delighting guests since 1949. Potter's Wax Museum hosts one of the most unique collections of wax figures from celebrities, sports stars, people in the news and modern day historic figures. George L. Potter contracted with GEMS of London, a noted wax studio, to create original one of a kind figures for his museum. Artists and craftsmen spent a great deal of time researching the process before creating these incredible lifelike figures. Each part of the figure is custom-tailored, using real hair and placed onto the figure a single strand at a time. Even the costumes are designed by one of the greatest in the industry.

Stand next to Tiger Woods, Captain Jack Sparrow, Elvis and Harry Potter. Take your picture with Angelina Jolie, Michael Jordan and Brittany Spears. See Princess Diana, Ponce de Leon and many of Potter's original figures. The collection was created in 1947 and 1948 making them some of the oldest most valuable collections in the United States.

Get face-to-face with some of the world’s most famous and prominent people. A visit to Potter’s Wax Museum provides an up close and personal look at nearly 170 different wax sculptures of Presidents, Kings, explorers, movie stars, artists, authors and more. The life-size wax figures are astoundingly real-looking and as you tour through you can learn interesting facts about the folks you are viewing. Potter’s Wax Museum has been captivating guests for 50 years and is the first museum of its kind in Florida.

Experience this unique museum of Potter's original collection and the newer, most recent figures from Hollywood's most elite entertainers.
